On August 27, 2014, a group of military personnel in an IFV, with Senior Soldier Osaulenko serving as the deputy commander and gunner-operator, left the checkpoint to respond to a call for help. In the area between the towns of Horlivka and Yenakiieve, Donetsk Region, Ukrainian soldiers were ambushed by separatists and attacked from three sides. During the battle, the gun jammed and the IFV engine stalled. Senior Soldier Osaulenko had to exit the combat vehicle and engage in combat as an infantryman.
