On August 24, 2014 column unit of the National Guard of Ukraine, which was composed of soldiers Smirnov, fell into an ambush near the village Voykovskaya, Amvrosiivskyi district, Donetsk region. He was one of the first orientated, took position and opened the fire in response, thereby protected the regrouping of unit.
